About Greg

Greg West Family PhotoMarried a teacher. Son of a teacher. Living a life profoundly influenced and incredibly blessed by public education, Greg West is proud to call Fayetteville and Cumberland County home.

Greg is married to Kristie Fields West, a teaching fellow from Meredith College who taught 3rd grade at Bill Hefner Elementary. Her parents both retired from the Cumberland County School system. Greg and Kristie have three children that are receiving a great education in our public schools.

Greg was born at Cape Fear Valley and grew up in the Eutaw area, the proud son of Hoyet and Sybil West. His father was a civil servant at Fort Bragg for over 40 years and his mother taught high school in Cumberland County for 36 years. His sister, Andrea, has also taught high school in Cumberland County.

Greg attended Margaret Willis Elementary, Ramsey Street Elementary, Edgewood Middle (now Nick Jeralds) and graduated from Terry Sanford High School. Great teachers, coaches and administrators influenced his life along the way. Greg was accepted into the prestigious College of Design at NC State University where he graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Environmental Design. He later received his Master of Business Administration degree from Campbell University.

After working in New York City for 4 years, Greg returned to Fayetteville and began a career in real estate. He is a licensed real estate broker and licensed general contractor. After a successful sales and management career in real estate brokerage, Greg is now an owner of Raywest Design Build, a commercial general contractor based in Fayetteville.

First elected to an at-large seat in 2002, Greg has served all the citizens and students of Cumberland County faithfully for 16 years. Greg ran partly because no one on the board in 2002 had children in our schools. Still today, he is one of board members, whose children currently attend our schools. A current parent’s perspective is a must as decisions are made today that will affect our youth for the rest of their lives. Re-elected in 2006, 2010, and 2014 Greg has been an integral part of elevating Cumberland County School to one of the premier school systems in the state and nation. His many civic accomplishments can be viewed on the following pages.

Greg is honored to be a deacon at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church where he has taught Sunday school and is in the sanctuary choir. Governor Bev Perdue appointed Greg to the Board of Trustees of NCCAT, the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching. He recently served as chairman and is excited to help this institution advance teaching as both an art and a profession.

Greg West typifies this community. He is both a proud product and a vested stakeholder in our public schools. He believes that education is the key to every child’s future and that every child deserves an equal opportunity to become the best possible version of themselves. A quality, progressive and innovative school system is our community’s greatest asset as we become a significant driver in the state and national economy.

Please work to keep Greg West on our Board of Education. He’s working for all of us.

Yes, that's me in a photo that appeared in The Fayetteville Observer on the last day of school in 1975! Now, with much experience, education, a family and far less hair, I want to continue serving both the school system that educated me and the county I am proud to call home!

Thanks for your vote on November 6th!
